Eco-Friendly Features

“The most remarkable feature of this historical moment on earth is not that we are on the way to destroying the world … It is that we are beginning to wake up as from a millennia-long sleep, to a whole new relationship to our world, to ourselves and each other.” — Joanna Macy

As we embark upon constructing our new center, we have the opportunity to enhance our stewardship of natural resources, working to create a more sustainable community and world.

We’ll finalize the list of eco-friendly features to be used in our new building as we achieve our fundraising goals. These may include:

  • A geothermal system for heating and cooling
  • Solar panels, to capture free energy
  • Energy-efficient building materials, to reduce our energy consumption
  • Low-flow plumbing and fixtures to save water
  • High-efficiency appliances
  • Use of natural materials, such as cork
  • Stormwater management with rain barrels and a rain garden
  • Reclaimed and recycled materials wherever possible

By following nature’s wisdom, we see what needs to be done and respond accordingly, inspired by the vows of the eco-bodhisattva:

“This is our vow:
Sentient beings are numberless, we vow to save them.
Consuming desires are endless, we vow to stop them.
Bio-relations are intricate, we vow to honor them.
Nature’s way is beautiful, we vow to become it.”
— Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Phillip Whalen
